How does Steinbeck present the theme of loneliness?

The book Of Mice and Men written by the American novelist John Steinbeck traces thelife of George and Lennie, two migrant workers running away from their problems and trying to rebuild a life that is falling apart. The novel is set in California in the 1930 during the Americandepression. Throughout the book the main themes that Steinbeck presents are friendship, loneliness, hopes and dreams he presents those themes using characterization, setting, and objects.

Throughout thenovel, the theme loneliness is emphasize throughout characterization: Firstly, George and Lennie are always traveling together but this doesn’t erase the fact that both are lonely, because of themental age of Lennie, George feels isolated he have no one to rely on, he is by himself: “doesn’t listen to him feel like he had no moral support” George is feeling lonely and depressed because he has “nomoral support”, nobody of his mental age to talk to, he can’t confide to Lennie because he have the mentality of a children. As for Lennie, he is always rejected by others because of his mentalproblems: “He’s dumb as hell”, but he is conscious of it so he prefers to escape into a world that is comfortable for him which is nature: “and I foun’ a mouse, I could keep it. “It’s the only place, wherehe can really be himself without being judged as if it’s the only thing he can be understood off. However, one character that represents loneliness better than any other is Crooks, who suffers froman extreme loneliness because of the color of his skin. He does not take part in any social activities on the ranch and is left out completely. He is so lonely that he turns to books, which soonbecomes boring and he will become lonely again.
